Frequently Asked Questions

We've assembled a list of frequently asked questions and answers (FAQ).  Please review the FAQ prior to visiting our dojo  We start you at a beginner level and teach you additional techniques as your knowledge, skill level, and rank increases.

We've taught self defense classes for over 25 years.  During this time we've appeared in newspapers and on television.  Please see our "in the news" page for more information.

Please contact us if you have questions or specific issues you would like to address to the head instructor.

Children's Jujitsu (ages 7 to 12)

We recognize the benefits the martial arts offers children and we've developed a Jujitsu class specifically for boys and girls using the same Danzan Ryu Jujitsu system taught in the adult class (see description below).

In the course of learning self defense techniques, students gain the benefit of patience, exercise, self-control, and discipline. Some of the many benefits our students receive include enhanced concentration in school, improved coordination, enhanced self-esteem, and character development. Areas stressed include: avoiding confrontations, always striving to improve, learning the discipline to continue and not give up, how to focus, and respect for others.

Our children's classes are now our largest and fastest growing group of martial arts students.  With over 25 years experience teaching martial arts to children, safety is our primary concern and our student to instructor ratio is five to one (one instructor for every five students).  A belt ranking system similar to the adult classes is used to distinguish proficiency and seniority.

For more information, please see our Class Schedule below.  Sorry, we do not accept students younger than 7 years of age.

Adult Jujitsu (ages 13 and up)

Jujitsu, "The art of softness", is a Japanese martial art of ancient origin, emphasizing techniques of self defense which do not harm the attacker. Students learn throwing techniques, escapes from holds, and applying holds to control a larger and stronger opponent. We teach the Danzan Ryu system of Japanese Jujitsu founded and developed by Professor Henry S. Okazaki.

With over 25 years of experience, we offer a complete and comprehensive Jujitsu program taught on an adult level. Our students practice their techniques with a partner and a black belt instructor who guides and assists you though the process of learning self defense.

We group the students by rank so each group can focus on the techniques that are appropriate for their skill level. Our adult Jujitsu class is appropriate for adults of all ages and physical abilities.

Please see our Class Schedule below and contact us if you have questions or comments about our martial arts classes.

Karate (ages 13 and up)

Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate is a martial art developed as a weaponless method of self defense. Students are taught how to defend themselves against various attacks using basic principles such as blocks, punches, parries, kicking and striking techniques. Students build self confidence, coordination, and mental awareness.

Founded by Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura during the 1800s, Matsumura Orthodox, also known as Matsumura Seito Ha or Sukunai Hayashi, is a traditional form of Okinawan Karate.

Sorry, we do not accept Karate students younger than 13 years of age.  We request that students between the ages of 7 and 12 take our Children's Jujitsu class

Questions?  Please see our Frequently Asked Questions or contact us for additional information.  Our Class Schedule shows class dates and times.

Weapons (by permission)

We believe that you need to know how how to use a weapon before you can learn how to defend yourself against it. By learning how to control a weapon, you learn its strengths and weaknesses. We teach weapons and defenses against
weapons after a student has achieved proficiency with their empty hand techniques.

Women's Self Defense (ages 13 and up)

Safety and survival in today's world requires you to know self defense. There are various types of assaults and we give you the best chance of survival by utilizing simple, effective, and proven self-defense tactics and techniques.

With over 25 years of experience teaching self-defense techniques to women, we specifically designed this session so women ages 13 and up can learn how to protect themselves in one 3-hour session.

This session does not require a lot of strength and all techniques are taught in a fun and safe atmosphere. Participants do not need to be in top physical condition or well coordinated.

One session only.  Please arrive at 8:45am.  We ask that you bring a pen and notebook.  Participants receive a self defense handbook.  Please contact us to be added to our waiting list for the Women's Self Defense class.
