DOJO (SCHOOL) INFORMATION

History

Lakewood Budo Kai is a traditional martial school providing all students a relatively fixed framework for interaction with one's seniors, peers, and juniors, so that everyone, not just the physically gifted, can have an opportunity to benefit from the training provided in a martial art school (dojo).  We offer additional detailed information on our dojo history (pdf).  While most classes are held indoors, we frequently have special workouts outdoors as shown in the photo to the right.  With over 25 years in the Long Beach area, we are frequently "in the news".

What is the meaning of Lakewood Budo Kai?

Lakewood Budo Kai means "The Lakewood school of stopping conflict".  Lakewood - our school (dojo) was initially founded in Lakewood California.  So the use of the name Lakewood gives heritage to the initial roots of the dojo. Lakewood also has a more current meaning as our dojo is close to Lakewood Blvd in Long Beach, California. Budo - Budo is often translated as "the Way of the Warrior", or "martial way", and may be interpreted as a way of stopping conflict. Kai - means school.

Head Instructor

Our head instructor, Jim Kelton, has over 30 years of martial arts experience and over 25 years teaching experience.  He opened the Lakewood Budo Kai dojo in 1979 and continues to teach on a regular basis.  For additional information on his background and martial arts career, please see his profile (pdf).  The photo to the right shows our head instructor (on left) immediately after receiving his 7th degree black belt in Karate and his 6th degree black belt in Jujitsu.

Dojo Etiquette

We want you to have fun while in our school (dojo).  Please also understand that this is a traditional dojo so we'd like you to keep dojo etiquette in mind when visiting and/or working out with us.  Don't worry if you can't remember all of these etiquette tips (pdf), simply ask a senior student for assistance.
